Seychelles prison represented at SADC workshop on violence in prisons and preventing radicalization |04 April 2023
The deputy Commissioner of Prison, Sam Dodin, accompanied by Sergeant Jenna Finesse, is attending a Southern African Development Community (SADC) regional workshop under the theme ‘Preventing Radicalization to Violent Extremism and Violence in Prisons’.
The workshop, which opened yesterday and will run until April 7, is being held in Johannesburg, South Africa.
This is the second workshop hosted by SADC in recent weeks that the Seychelles Prison Service has the opportunity to participate.
Prison and correctional services within Africa, and especially those within conflict zones, or where illicit narcotic activities are gaining ground, raise the specter of extremists groups forming.
“We remain fully engaged with not only our SADC partners at every opportunity but as well national partners. This so that pro-active steps are taken and continue to be taken, and in the Seychelles I refer specifically to the drug culture and its negative impacts, can be addressed in a manner that restores hope to families and to our communities,” said Raymond St Ange, Commissioner of Seychelles Prison Service.
