The local entertainment industry Gran Kaz has donated R20,000 towards the Seychelles delegation to participate in the Berlin Games in June following the Seychelles Special Olympics’ call for financial assistance.

The handover of the donation on Monday was hosted by the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Family at Family House, Bel Eau.

Gran Kaz public relations & communication manager, Shama Amesbury, said for many years, since its inception, Gran Kaz has supported sports in Seychelles.

“We firmly believe that participation in sports provides the youth with a strong foundation, purpose and discipline, which in turn help to alleviate some social ills. We are also an advocate of inclusivity and staunch believers in equal chances and equal opportunities. The Special Olympics marry these two concepts perfectly,” Ms Amesbury said.

The Seychelles Special Olympics chairperson, Helen Ernesta, highlighted the purpose of the donation drive, which is to assist the 17 members of the Seychelles delegation consisting of 10 athletes, one doctor, five coaches, one head of delegation and one assistant head of delegation. While extending her appreciation to Gran Kaz for its generous contribution, she also called for more businesses to follow suit.

Youth and Sports department's principal secretary, Ralph Jean-Louis, also commended Gran Kaz for instantly accepting his support request.

“Since the call for assistance, the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Family is exploring all avenues to meet the Committee's goals. Aside from the aid from the National Sports Council, we've reached out to several of our partners, one being Gran Kaz, and I'm sure this will help the Olympians and their Committee towards achieving their goals,” PS Jean-Louis said.

Businesses and individuals are encouraged to donate towards this great cause, which provides a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for some individuals within the disabled community.

Interested parties are encouraged to contact the Seychelles Special Olympics’ national director.
