Swimblue Pals, City Ladies win Cancer Day tournament

Swimblue Pals and City Ladies are the men’s and women’s champions of the charity volleyball tournament organised by the local basketball club Premium Cobras as part of the activities to commemorate this year’s World Cancer Day celebrated internationally on February 4 every year.

Jointly hosted with the Cancer Concern Association (CCA), the tournament held over the weekend at the National Sports Council (NSC) Hall gathered 20 teams – 10 males and 10 females.

Registration fee for the competition was R1000 per team, and all profits collected went to the CCA, while Premium Cobras took care of all other expenses.

Men’s winners Swimblue Pals were drawn in group B where they finished on top, ahead of Outsiders, Premium Cobras, and Neo Youth, ensuring them a semifinal spot against Ton Neo who were the runners-up in group A.

The other men’s semifinal was between Spikers who finished as leaders in group A and Outsiders who were the runners-up in group B.

In the semifinal, Swimblue Pals beat Ton Neo 2-0, while in the second last-four match Spikers eliminated Outsiders by the same score to set the final scene.

In the final, Swimblue Pals beat Spikers 2-1 to finish as champions, while in the third-place match, Ton Neo beat Outsiders 2-0.

In the women’s competition, City Ladies topped group B, finishing ahead of Cascade who were second in the group, while La Digue Ladies dominated group A, finishing on top ahead of Swimgals.

In the semifinals, City Ladies beat Swimgals 2-0, while Cascade eliminated La Digue Ladies 2-1.

City Ladies came out stronger than Cascade in the final, beating the latter 2-0 to claim the trophy.

Swimgals, on the other hand, were ranked third overall in the competition after beating La Digue Ladies 2-0 in the third-place match.

After the prize-giving ceremony, a cheque worth R20,000 was handed over to CCA treasurer Meryl Descombes who on behalf of the association thanked Premium Cobras for the initiative and all the teams who took part in the tournament, making it a success.
