Semis and finals set for today
The semifinals and final matches of the U18 school basketball championship will take place today at the Victoria Gymnasium, following the preliminaries held yesterday.
A total of seven boys’ and three girls’ selections registered for the competition which is being jointly hosted by the National Sports Council (NSC), the Seychelles Basketball Federation (SBF) and the Ministry of Education.
The seven boys’ selection were divided into two groups where Anse Boileau, Perseverance, Plaisance and Anse Royale battled in group A, while group B featured Praslin, Mont Fleuri and Pointe Larue.
The top two finishers in the groups will play in a cross knockout today, while the three girls’ selections are engaging in a mini-league where the top two will clash in the final.
In group A, Plaisance finished on top with six points from three wins in as many matches played.
In their first match, the players of coach Jerry Andrew, led by the experienced duo of Nathan Ho-Tive and Gel Joubert who both play for second divisioners PLS Suns, beat Anse Royale 31-5, while in their second match, the easily cruised past Perseverance 52-3. In their third and last group match, Plaisance beat Anse Boileau 26-5 to finish top of the group.
With four points from two Victories, Anse Boileau finished second in the group, defeating Anse Royale 37-4 and Perseverance 56-0.
In group B, Mont Fleuri boasting a line-up of players from second division side Bel Air Basketball Academy (Baba) dominated the group, collecting maximum four points from two wins in as many matches played.
In their first match against Praslin, despite their experience, Mont Fleuri, guided by coach Gregoire Scholastique, had to dig deep into their reserves to overcome the inner island side 18-11, before winning their second match 42-5 over Pointe Larue.
As for Praslin, they finished second in the group after a win and a defeat, beating Pointe Larue 37-15.
In the girls’ competition, Plaisance defeated Perseverance 24-2 in their first match, before narrowly losing 14-16 to Anse Boileau in their second game.
The third match in the group between Anse Boileau and Perseverance has been scheduled for today.
In the boys’ semifinals today, Plaisance will play against Praslin, while Mont Fleuri will meet Anse Boileau.
