SIAH hosts skills development competition |01 December 2022
Samia Bastienne and Ethan Felix overall best students
Samia Bastienne and Ethan Felix came out as best overall students in a skills development competition organised by the Seychelles Institute of Agriculture & Horticulture (SIAH).
The activity took place last Friday on the SIAH campus at Anse à la Mouche.
It was initiated by the National Sports Council (NSC) and was organised jointly by SIAH and NSC officials. The first edition was organised in 2019 when Francis Remie and his team introduced the activity to SIAH.
The objectives of the activity were to allow learners to demonstrate the skills they had acquired in the training programme at SIAH and to promote physical exercise and healthy living among the learners.
Altogether 25 learners competed in 12 different activities in the three-domain of studies at SIAH – ornamental horticulture and landscaping; crops; and livestock.
The learners were divided into four groups based on a house system to compete in those activities. Each group consisted of a balance of learners from each course. The panel of judges followed specific criteria to judge the different competitions. First, second and third positions for each group received gold, silver, and bronze medals respectively. Trophies were awarded to the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th positions.
The results are as follows
1) Setting up/ mounting a drinker: 1st - Shadrack Joubert, 2nd – Samia Bastienne, 3rd – Sarah Barra and 4th- Aeryl Marcel
2) Mounting of feeder: 1st - Chanel Fanny, 2nd - Samia Bastienne, 3rd - Anabelle Baker and 4th – Nerissa Denousse
3) Ground clearing (uprooting eggplant): 1st - Christ Uzice, 2nd - Ethan Felix, 3rd - Shadrack Joubert and 4th - Dan Philoe
4) Ridge Making: 1st - Ethan Felix, 2nd - Christ Uzice, 3rd - Chanel Fanny and 4th – Nyshyla Milius
5) Filling media in Poly pots: 1st - Danisha Michel, 2nd - Chanel Fanny, 3rd – Danisha Nicette and 4th - Darius Louis
6) Filling manure in Goony bags: 1st - Ethan Felix, 2nd - Chanel Fanny, 3rd - Christ Uzice and 4th - Shadrack Joubert
7) Stem Cutting: 1st - Shireen Antione, 2nd - Ashlyna Youpa, 3rd - Vania Larue and 4th -Danisha Nicette
8) Air layering: 1st - Samia Bastienne, 2nd - Anabelle Baker, 3rd - Nerissa Denousse and 4th -Dan Philoe
9) Trimming and pruning of ornamental plants: 1st - Naomie Dupres, 2nd - Thyra Albert, 3rd - Shyra Julienne and 4th - Dan Philoe
10) Assembling of a garden hoe: 1st – Nishyla Milius, 2nd - Sarah Barra, 3rd - Ethan Felix, 4th - Christ Uzice
11) Restraining of Goat: 1st - Chanel Fanny, 2nd - Shadrack Joubert, 3rd - Ethan Felix and 4th - Christ Uzice.
The overall result was won by the yellow team in 1st Position, blue team in 2nd Position, red team in 3rd Position and Green team in 4th Position.
The event was attended by the principal secretary for Agriculture Keven Nancy as well as the health representative Stephanie Charlette, and Sandra Lepathy, a representative from the Ministry of Education.
The students and the staff of SIAH are all looking forward for the 2023 edition.
