La Passe lose 0-7 to Mamelodi Sundowns

Premier League champions La Digue-based La Passe suffered a heavy 0-7 defeat at the hands of Mamelodi Sundowns in the second round first leg match of the Champions League on Sunday at the Loftus Versfeld stadium in Pretoria, South Africa.

Goals by Grant Kekana, Mothobi Mvala, Aubrey Modiba, Sipho Mbule and Sphelele Mkhulise and a brace by Gaston Sirino saw Sundowns take a commanding lead with the second leg still to come at Loftus on Friday.

It is to note that in 2019, Sundowns rewrote history when they recorded the biggest-ever victory in the competition when they beat another Seychelles side, namely Côte d’Or, 11-1 in Pretoria to reach the group stages after winning 16-1 on aggregate.

The match was over at the interval as Sundowns had put in five goals against a side which offered nothing in this fixture.

The floodgates were opened just seconds into the match when Kekana towered above the defence in the six-yard area and nodded in the opener.

Sundowns were able to penetrate deep into La Passe’s half nearly every time they got the ball, while barely having to defend their own half.

La Passe left gaps at the back and Sundowns spotted that and made use of it, and by the time the half-time whistle blew the scoreline was 5-0.

Sundowns continued where they left off in the second half as they looked to extend their lead, and it was not long before they increased their lead as Sipho Mbule scored his first goal in Sundowns’ colours before the hour mark, while Mkhulise scored the seventh goal late in the match.
