Pupils spell their way to victory in final round of Word Splash Competition

Brendan Morel, winner of the P3-P4 category

The grand winners of the Word Splash Competition are Brendan Morel, Ellah Ernesta, Vurlaine Ladouce and Melissa Choisy.

The final round of the Word splash spelling competition organised by the Seychelles National Youth Council (SNYC) was held on Friday afternoon at the International Conference Centre (ICCS). The activity forms part of the calendar of activities for the Youth Festival.

The competition was organised with the aim of promoting reading, the use of proper English words and spelling among pupils.

After the elimination rounds held on August 9, 10 and 11, four categories were left to fight one last battle of spelling. The categories consisted of the P3-P4, P5-P6, S1-S2, and S3-S4, with 12 participants in each primary level and six participants in each secondary level.

The students within the same level competed against each other to determine the winners of each category.

The principal secretary for youth and sports, Ralph Jean-Louis, the chief executive of SNYC, Penny Belmont and her deputy, Ghislaine Belmont were among other guests including parents, teachers and SNYC staff members present at the event and who watched excitedly as the students focused on spelling their given words. The atmosphere was one filled with excitement as fellow pupils and other guests showed their support to the students who had made it thus far in the competition.

Although a lengthy event, the pupils had fun spelling a variety of words that even had a few members from the audience quietly whispering to themselves in confusion. Finally after each pupil had taken the spotlight, winners for each category were decided and were as follows.

For the P3-P4 category the first place went to Brendan Morel from Beau Vallon primary school, the second place went to Hayden Labrosse from Pointe Larue primary school, and the third place went to Albert Dimgba from Anse Aux Pins primary school.

Contradicting the all-boy winners of the first primary category, the P5-P6 category prizes were secured by a trio of girls. Ellah Ernesta from Anse Royale primary school took first place, Malikah Michaud from Port Glaud primary school was in second place, and Maria Pointe from La Misère primary school followed in third place.

As for the two secondary categories, the words they were given to spell were a bit more complex but the students remained unwavering and gave it their best shots.

For the S1-S2 category, in first place was Vurlaine Ladouce from Anse Boileau school, in second place was Mikel Marie from Perseverance school and in third place Saiid Lesperance all the way from Grand Anse Praslin.  In the last category S3-S4, the first position went to Melissa Choisy from English River school, the second position went to Elaine Aglae from Belonie school, and third position went to Clara Sultan from Anse Boileau school.

The winner for the P3-P4 category, Brendan Morel, said the competition was a fun experience for him. “It was very good! I liked the way it went and everyone helped us win this and get this happiness!,” he exclaimed, declaring that he would definitely be joining the spelling battle once more next year to defend his title.
