Speaker Mancienne meets Maldivian counterpart

The Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Roger Mancienne, received the Speaker of the Parliament and former President of the Republic of Maldives, Hon. Mohamed Nasheed, at the Assembly on Thursday this week.

Speaker Mancienne welcomed Hon. Nasheed to the Assembly and provided an introduction on the parliamentary system in place in Seychelles.

During their discussions, Speaker Nasheed highlighted the potential for further bilateral cooperation between the Seychelles and Maldives in tourism, trade, air and maritime connectivity.

Both Speakers discussed exploring the possibility of strengthening the relationship between the two countries to promote more economic growth within the Indian ocean region.

Hon. Nasheed was also accompanied by Hon. Eva Abdulla, the Deputy Speaker of the Parliament of Maldives, Hon. Hassan Latheef, the honorary consul, Lambert Bonne and Ibrahim Ahmed.

Hon. Abdulla spoke of the representation of women in the Maldivian Parliament and further highlighted the need to further strengthen the relationships between the two Parliaments especially in the international forums.

The delegation also had a brief tour of the Assembly Chamber and parliamentary museum.

The Speaker was accompanied by the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Gervais Henrie, the leader of government business, Hon. Bernard Georges, the chairperson of the International Affairs Committee, Hon. Waven William, the Chief Whip of the United Seychelles Caucus, Hon. Sylvanne Lemiel and Alexandria Faure, the Deputy Clerk to the National Assembly.
