Seychellois athletes at the opening ceremony of the Games

Slow start for Team Seychelles on day one

Following the official opening of the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England on Thursday night, some of our local athletes were already in action yesterday, but none of them advanced further in their respective events, or sports disciplines at the Games.

In boxing, local pugilist Fabio Roselie, who competed in the over 60kg-63.5kg (light welter weight) category, lost his bout by knockout after only 34 seconds in the first round against Billy Polkinghorn of Australia.

Today in the over 67kg-71kg (light middle weight) category, Shain Boniface will fight against Merven Claire of neighbouring Mauritius.

In swimming, none of the local swimmers managed to make it out of their respective heats, while Tyler Fred registered the best performance of the day for Team Seychelles, finishing third in the men's 50m butterfly – heat 3 – in 25.84 seconds.

In heat number four for the same category, Moncherry clocked 25.67 seconds to finish sixth ahead of compatriot Mathieu Bachmann who was seventh in 26.16 seconds.

In heat number four of the women's 200m freestyle, Therese Soukoup clocked 2 minutes, 17.89 seconds (2:17.89) to finish eighth.

Fred was in action again in the men's 100m backstroke – heat 2 – where he finished seventh in 1 minute 2.14 seconds (1:02.14).

In heat number three for the mixed 4 x 100m freestyle relay, Team Seychelles made up of Aaliyah Palestrini, Simon Bachmann, Moncherry and Soukup finished seventh in 3:54.21.
