Seychelles at world’s biggest chess rendez-vous
Following the Covid-19 pandemic where the Chess Olympiad was held online with a rapid time control that affected players' online ratings, the competition has finally regained its physical status with the 44th presently taking place in Chennai, India.
The 44th Chess Olympiad, featuring players from 187 countries, is taking place at the Hotel Four Points by Sheraton, Mamallapuram, and will go on until August 10.
The Olympiad is being held in India for the first time ever, after being moved out of Moscow in Russia following the Russia-Ukraine crisis.
It is being jointly hosted by the International Chess Federation (Fide) and the All Indian Chess Federation.
Seychelles is being represented at the event by two selections with Marie-Ange Moustache, Crizie Todisoa, Anna Barra, Emmy Marie, Simone Malbrook and team captain Lior Aizenberg making up the women’s team, while the men’s team feature Shakhti Alexander, Andre Stratonowitsch, Reygene Santillan, Ragul Pillay, Rajaganesan Ramachandran and team captain Benjamin Hoareau who will also attend the Fide congress in his capacity as chairman of the local chess governing body.
The 44th Olympiad was officially launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the presence of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin at the Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai.
