Pragassen wins
Klaus Pragassen was the winner of the main trophy of the H Savy Insurance handicap tournament after edging Rod Thorrington 3-2 in the best-of-three final last Friday at the Mont Fleuri courts.
Two other finals to decide the winners of the plate and shield divisions were played on the same day.
In the cup final, Pragassen, with a handicap of -11, lost the first game 4-11 against Thorrington whose handicap was -7. Pragassen then pulled level with an 11-5 game two win before taking the lead at 2-1 with another victory – 11-9 – in game three. But Thorrington did not give in as he won the fourth game 11-8 to equalise at 2-2 and force a decisive fifth game. But this time, champion Pragassen showed what he is made of as he won it 11-7 for a 3-2 victory.
The winner of the plate final was also decided after five games and victory went to Michael Landon (0) against Aurore Archambal (+5).
In what turned out to be a very intense game, the more experienced Landon beat Archambal 3-2 (6-11, 11-8, 9-11, 14-12, 12-10).
Veteran player Mickey Noël (-5) met newcomer Shawn Caithness (-2) in the shield final.
Noël got off the mark first with victory in the first game but Caithness won the next three for a 4-1 (9-11, 11-4, 12-10, 11-5) victory.
