World Jump Day, July 20

Jumping to save the world

Have you ever wondered what would happen if every single person on earth jumped at the same time? It seems this question occurred to famous German artist, Torsten Lauschman, back in 2006 while he was trying to raise awareness about global warming. After launching his website for the first time, a total of over six million people registered for the ‘jump’ and the day has been celebrated every year since.

Although scientifically discredited by many, Lauschman’s idea was that if millions of people all jumped at the same time, then the earth would shift from its orbit and we would safely reduce the effects of global warming by moving further away from the sun. Do you think this could really work? Scientists around the world were at conflict over this single concept. Some believed that the combined weight of all humans on earth was too minimal to have any effect when removed, while others were convinced that it was entirely possible to change the earth’s orbit by changing its mass.

Today, World Jump Day – celebrated on July 20 – is more of a fun way to promote exercising and get in some extra cardio all while raising serious awareness of global warming. Though we do not know if we may be able to actually move the earth away from the sun, together we can still improve our lifestyles and pledge to better ourselves to reduce the current effects of global warming.

There’s only one way to find out if this is the solution to our problem. At exactly 13 seconds after 3.39pm today, get on your marks, get set and JUMP!
