Golf - Reshab Sewraj and Damien Hoareau win David Burton’s big birthday celebration pairs event

For his 70th birthday, Seychelles Golf Club member David Burton brought the celebrations to the course at Anse Aux Pins on Saturday July 9.

Though his actual birthday was in May, it is never too late to celebrate such a milestone birthday, and Dave very generously sponsored this novelty pairs competition.

The format was a first at the Seychelles Golf Club (SGC) where the Stableford points of each playing partner in the pair would be multiplied on completion of each hole. Though many players thought high scores would be the result they were quickly reminded that anything multiplied by 0 is 0. With little margin for error the pairs set about the challenge with gusto.

There were 14 pairs participating on this windy day, which made the course play slightly more challenging than normal. Some strong scores were posted after the front nine such as from Guy Adam and Godfroy Andrade, always a strong pairing in these types of events, posting a respectable half way score. However, Reshab Sewraj’s form from the last few weeks has held firm and combining with Damien Hoareau they led the way after nine holes.

His father, Vishal Sewraj and partner Richard D’Offay (finishing third) posted a total of 67 points to be clubhouse leaders after 18 holes, only to be edged out within minutes by the Adam and Andrade duo with 68 points (finishing second). This pair stayed comfortably in the lead till the last pairing of Reshab Sewraj and Damien Hoareau came in, and posted a combined score of 71 points to clinch the win.

It was the third win in as many weeks for Sewraj, marking him a bright talent for the future as he is still a junior player. These wins can be laid at the feet of the huge amount of work that he is doing on the course. His effort combined with the efforts of his coach William Weidner are helping him drive his handicap down in support of his aspiration which is to see how far his golf can take him.

Other prizes up for grabs, best front nine went to Alix Esparon and Joe Elisa, best back nine went to Theo Hansen and Louis Vandagne, nearest the pins one to Louis Vandagne and the other to Adrian Andrade.

The SGC would like to thank David Burton for his amazing sponsorship and we wish him the very best and hope for many more golfing years to come at SGC.
