Former President Danny Faure speaks at The Ocean Race side-event

Former President Faure delivering his speech

Former President Danny Faure, the founder and chairman of the Danny Faure Foundation, delivered a speech at The Ocean Race side-event, held on June 30 in the margins of the 2022 United Nations Ocean Conference.

The discussion focused on how action to acknowledge and protect the intrinsic value of the ocean, in law, could be accelerated.

In his address, former President Faure opined “There is a need for a paradigm shift for rights concerning the ocean. Rights that govern our relationship with the ocean must be elaborated and recognised for all our benefits. Enshrining a framework that could efficiently ensure that human-activity is kept in check and in balance with the health of the ocean to ensure that it can continue to provide food security, build the planet’s resilience to climate change and provide an equitable and sustainable future for today’s generation and the next, is essential”.

The Ocean Race reiterated their gratitude to the government of Seychelles and to the Foundation for hosting The Ocean Race Summits Seychelles on March 21, 2022.

Former President Faure was amongst the following speakers at the event: Ulisses CORREIA E. SILVA, Prime Minister of the Republic of Cabo Verde; Richard Brisius, Race Chairman, The Ocean Race; Callie Veelenturf, Earth Law Centre, Marine conservation biologist and National Geographic Explorer; Kristina Gjerde, Senior High Seas Advisor, IUCN Ocean Team, Advisor to Schmidt Ocean Institute.

The event was co-organised by the government of Cabo Verde, the government of Seychelles, the MIRPURI Foundation, Earth Law Centre and the Danny Faure Foundation.
