Cricket     Innovation and initiation is the name of the game for Lakstars

Lakstars sports club held their inaugural six-a-side hard ball cricket tournament named ‘Lakstars Premier League 2022’ on Saturday June 18, 2022.

It was a day filled with fun and cricket for the members of the Lakstars sports club. Four teams, namely Lakstars Warriors, Lakstars Challengers, Lakstars Titans and Lakstars Thunders competed to determine who would be the best amongst the best. The teams played each other on a league basis with the top two meeting in the final.

Lakstars Challenges and Lakstars Titans emerged as the finalists heading the table in first and second places respectively.

Winning the toss, Challengers captain Daminda Dhananjaya invited the Titans to bat first. The opening batsmen put on a good opening partnership. Thiwanka Rajapaksha scored 35 runs in 18 deliveries, while Suranga Fernando scored 14 runs off 13 deliveries. They managed to score a very competitive score of 53 runs for the loss of 3 wickets in their allotted 5 overs. Lithira Hathurusinghe was the most economical bowler for the Challengers with 4 runs and a wicket in his over.

Opening batting for the Challengers, captain Daminda led from the front, scoring an unbeaten 35 runs in 18 deliveries. Pathum Shyaminda scored 12 runs in 8 deliveries. They managed to reach the target in 4.3 overs.

Thiwanka Rajapaksha was judged the man of the tournament for his all-round performance.

During the presentation, awards were presented to the top three bowlers and batsmen of the recently concluded divisions 1 and 2 T20 tournament. This opportunity was also seized to felicitate the sponsors and the supporters of the club.

In line with the Seychelles Cricket Association (SCA) junior cricket development programme, an under 15, seven-a-side match was also played between the first round of the Premier League matches. The under 15 match between International School and Independent School was played.

Batting first, International School scored 46 runs in their allotted 6 overs for the loss of 1 wicket. Lithira Hathurusinghe was the highest scorer with the bat for ISS with 14 runs off 13 deliveries.

In response, Independent School beat the set target with ease with a delivery to spare. Hoswin Khannan was adjudged the man-of-the-match.

Representatives of the board of the Seychelles Cricket Association (SCA) were present throughout the day as well as many other supporters and well-wishers. The SCA commended the club for their innovative ideas and initiative in organising such events and for bringing cricket to another level on the soil of Seychelles islands, as stated by Mr Krishna Naidoo in his speech.
