Oneone5 Sports & Event Management Pty. Ltdcomes up with sports development at Beau Vallon

On March 2, 2022 the Cabinet of Ministers discusseda proposal from Oneone5 Sports& Event Management Pty. Ltdwhich was submitted prior to the Cabinet decision for a development in a private public partnership.

This development, which will serve the community and tourists alike, includes a sports hall which can be used for different sports activities and is designed within the requirements of international sports organisations. It includes event facilities like a sky lounge and VIP areas, a conference hall for national and international conferences, a sports academy for the education of young Seychellois to prepare them for international careers, space for medical sports treatment, a state-of-the-art indoor gym, an outdoor basketball court fulfilling Fiba rules and regulations, a beach gym as well as a boot camp facility. Furthermore, it will host a nutrition bakery with a coffee shop enclosed, a sports shop with international brands, the sports pub ‘Regatta’ and the only pure fish restaurant in Seychelles ‒ ‘The Marlin’ ‒ which serves fish in all its varieties. ‘The Marlin’ will provide as well a ‘Sushi belt’, a ‘Tapanaki counter’ and a ‘Hot pot’ facility. All food served in the facility is grown by local farmers, the fish is delivered exclusively by the local fishing industry.

The development is based on the newest sustainable technologies which will decrease energy consumption, at the same time increasing green energy production. In 2026, the arena will be carbon neutral. “oneone5 Arena’s” operation will be transitioning to 100% renewable energy by 2027.

The project will work with suppliers that embrace environmentally-friendly manufacturing processes, all food provided will be sourced by local farms which are focusing on organic farming.
The developers are working together with a Swedish company which produces drinking water in an eco-friendly local micro-factory at site. All organic waste is composted, all single-use plastics will be removed from the kitchens. The local community will be strongly involved to learn more about the principles of sustainable living and a healthy lifestyle by offering guided tours and seminars. A three-chamber organic sewage treatment plant will focus on the sustainable dealing of waste water. The rainwater harvesting system will ensure the irrigation of the outside areas in times of less rain. It will be as well used for cleaning the outside areas and glass facades. All employees have to accept a zero-drug policy.

The project was submitted for approval in May 2022.

Development history

In early 2020 a small team of sports professionals and project developers understood the need for such facility in Seychelles. The team existed at this time out of Oliver Bastienne who is responsible for the economical operation of the project and Michael Schwarz, a German architect and project developer who practices in Seychelles and developed the project in terms of design and advanced technologies to be used.

Mid of 2021, Seychellois professional basketballer Abdel Sylla who plays with French club Hermine Nantes of the LNB Pro B, joined the team. He oversees the sports development of the project and will support local and international sports events when the arena is operational.

In 2022 the “oneone5 Sports & Event Management Pty Ltd.” was founded.

At the same time, Luke Fonsekajoined the team and he will run with his team the beach gym. The boot camp will host mainly incentives on management level of international. ‘Oneone5 Sports & Event Management Pty. Ltd’ will work together with local guesthouses and hotels to accommodate those guests and participants of incentives who visit Seychelles for physical training and to learn more about a healthy lifestyle. This group of visitors is internationally very fast growing.

The team found out at a very early stage about the outdated status quo of in- and outdoor sports facilities. Closed facilities for public events did not exist on the islands or were technically outdated. The youth of the country could not find facilities which ensured a professional training, not just for physical activities but for the knowledge of sports theory as well. In the following weeks, months and years the project was developed further based on several market research.

After several meetings with ministers and their ministries in charge, inter alia Minister Marie Celine Zialor (Youth, Sports and Family); Minister Billy Rangasamy (Lands and Housing); Honorable member of the National Assembly for Beau Vallon John Hoareau; Patrick Payet Secretary of State in the Ministry of Finance, National Development and Trade;principal secretary for youth and sports Ralph Jean-Louis; principal secretary for lands Murielle Morgan; National Sports Councilchief executive Jean Larue;Seychelles Infrastructure Agency chief executive Jitesh Shah and international developers experienced in this field as well, the Cabinet of the Republic of Seychelles decided on March 2, 2022 to support the project by offering a site to the developers on a lease basis in a public private partnership between the government of Seychelles and the “oneone5 Sports & Event Management Pty. Ltd’.

The name of the project is related to the 115 islands of the country.

Location

The location is nationally and internationally considered a prime location on the island of Mahe in the district of Beau Vallon. It is known as ‘Regatta site’ with its annual ‘Regatta event’ which is during thesedays a magnet for the local population and tourists alike. The project will neighbour the ‘Savoy Hotel Beau Vallon’ and use a part of the Regatta site in this area.

Investment

The investment of the development is calculated with R106 million which will be provided solely by a private investment firm resp. private investors which want to support the future of the country. As due to the statement of the developers, Abdel Sylla, Oliver Bastienne and Michael Schwarz the project will show alternatives especially for the youth of Seychelles of how to spend the weekend and to learn that sweat, discipline and hard work are the keys to success. The project can be compared to international developments in this field with one huge advantage which the developers call “unique selling point”: The beauty and the nature of one of the most beautiful countries in the world and its location at one of the best plots in Seychelles at the sea.

The project follows the ‘Tourism 4.0’ strategy which is focusing on the sustainable development of the country from which the local tourism industry will benefit from massively. This includes the provision of club training camps in the off-season of international leagues.

Other projects ‘oneone5 Sports & Event Management Pty. Ltd’ are the establishment of a business incubator on Mahe and the development of vertical farming projects to ensure food security for the country in the future. The research of a facility for medical tourism was just launched together with an international private clinic chain. In all projects the youth of the country plays an important role. Seychelles will be the first country which added to the classical three columns of sustainable development – energy, transportation and food security – a fourth column which we call “local Talent”.
