Plaisance secondary celebrates 30th anniversary

It was double celebrations at the Plaisance secondary school on Wednesday as the institution marked its 30th anniversary as well as Children’s Day.

The ambiance at the school was electric and students were full of energy, wearing glitters, singing and dancing.

A ceremony was organised by the school where the council chairperson and the head teacher, Jenny Kilindo, addressed the students.

These were followed by poem recital, songs, testimony by past students, drama showcasing years of the PLS secondary school, scarf presentation to peer educators, presentation of pin to Bronze awardees for the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, tree planting and exhibition.

“30 years of the school was the dream of the government at that time to separate the primary and secondary students for better and focused learning. We have had the chance to develop different programmes and our teachers have had the opportunity to specialise themselves and we saw that our past students keep coming to support the school and the students,” shared Ms Kilindo.

Having a housing estate next to the school has been a challenge, explained Ms Kilindo. “In housing estates, we do have social ills, and already some students have issues with each other and living next to the school does not help. But we do have peer educators that are role models to the students and they help their peers. We also do lots of extra-curricular activities to keep the students united. My message for the students is that they become more motivated and disciplined in their studies. For my teachers, I know this job is not easy but if we are still here, it means that we have the students at heart and I applaud them for that and continue to shower love on the students even if some do not listen to us.”

Currently the school has 665 students and 70 staff and during the celebration some parents and past students were invited to attend and celebrate this achievement.
