Seychelles to be represented in international dance competition

A group of 37 students from Seychelles will be taking part in an international Latin & Ballroom dance competition known as the ‘Independence Cup’ in Gaborone, Botswana, for a period of nine days as from September 21, 2019.

The Independence Cup is an open championship of Latin, Ballroom, Salsa, Bachata, Hip Hop, Jika/Spantsula and Contemporary dancing; it is renowned as one of the biggest dance competitions in Botswana.

The trip is being organised by ‘Heartbeat Ballroom & Latin Dance Studio Seychelles’, in collaboration with the Seychelles Dance Sport Association.

Heartbeat Dance Studio, based in Victoria, has been operating for about three years, offering both social and competitive dance classes, including Cha-Cha-Cha, Jive, Salsa, Samba and Rumba.

Speaking to Seychelles NATION, the managing director of Heartbeat Dance Studio, Tiny Lindiwe Wazime, said that this competition will greatly benefit the students who are involved.

“It provides them with a way to exercise, it teaches them discipline, it helps to take them away from alcohol or drug abuse, and it keeps them busy during the school holidays, preventing them from staying at home doing nothing where they might be tempted to do inappropriate things,” said Mrs Wazime.

“It is part of what we are working towards; it is one of the goals that we are working hard to achieve. We have been training the students and we are looking forward to giving them some international exposure.

“While it will be their first dance competition, we are looking forward to seeing what they will achieve and we are hopeful that we will bring something back home,” she added.

She adds that the school holiday programme currently being offered at Heartbeat Dance Studio, has also been helping these students, leading up to their trip to Botswana.

The holiday programme targets children from the age of five years with different whole-day packages involving dance classes as well as educational games.

Mrs Wazime takes the opportunity to inform members of the public about Heartbeat Dance Studio’s upcoming programme of activities and events taking place next month:
