Keddy Agnes wins gold with technical knockout
Keddy Agnes made light work of Mozambican Alfredo Muzimba in the +92kg weight category, winning by technical knockout after just 40 seconds into the first round to win Seychelles’ only medal ‒ gold ‒ at the Africa Zone 4 boxing Championship in Maputo, Mozambique.
Fighting in the red corner, Agnes clinched the gold medal in the final on Saturday at the Maxaquene Pavilion after the referee made two counts of 8 against Muzimba who was fighting in front of his own fans.
After his win, Agnes wrote on his Facebook page: “Thanks God for my performance. Big thanks to my family and friends. More to come.”
Three other Seychellois boxers took part in the competition and they all lost their first fight. Fabio Roselie lost on a 0-5 score to Andrew Chilata of Zambia in the 60kg category, Shain Boniface lost his 69kg fight to Wandie Takota of South Africa on the same score and Jovanie Bouzin lost by retirement in the second round in the 71kg division.
Boxers from eight countries ‒ South Africa, Eswatini, Lesotho, Zambia, Namibia, Malawi, Seychelles and host Mozambique ‒ took part in the championship organised by the Mozambican Boxing Federation after Angola and Zambia who were supposed to host the competition, announced their withdrawal.
