478.5 tons of spoilt fish dumped at Providence landfill |22 April 2022

News of fish being dumped at the Providence landfill followed by photos sent to us by our readers has been confirmed by the deputy chief executive of the Land and Waste Management Agency (LWMA) Rahul Mangroo.

Mr Mangroo said 478.5 tons of fish have been transported to the landfill over the last six days, since Saturday.  He said the fish come from a tuna vessel and are not fit for human consumption and also cannot be used for animal feed after they got contaminated by hydraulic oil.

“Usually the landfill does accept spoilt fish in small quantities as most of the fish that are unfit for human consumption are sent for processing for animal feed. But in this case the fish are not safe,” Mr Mangroo said.
