Change in fixtures as Madagascar withdraw from competition
With defending champions Madagascar withdrawing from the 2021 Cosafa Beach Soccer Championship, Seychelles will play on two group matches and a new champion will be crowned after this coming Sunday’s final.
The Malagasies have had to withdraw from the competition due to travel challenges caused by the Covid-19 pandemic which has severely restricted air links to and from the island of Madagascar.
This also means there will be three teams in each pool ‒ A and B. Pool A comprises hosts South Africa, Seychelles and Angola, while pool B is made up of Mozambique, Comoros and guest nation Tanzania.
Seychelles will still play their first group A match today against hosts South Africa at the South Beach Arena in Durban, South Africa. Their second encounter is against Angola tomorrow.
The top two teams in each pool will advance to the semifinals that will be played on Friday. On the same day, there will also be a plate final for the two teams who finish bottom of the groups.
After a day off on Saturday, the winning semifinalists will meet in the final on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Sports NATION has learned that player Marlon Sophola, one of four 11-aside players included in the Seychelles squad, has lost his mother.
Still according to reports, he has decided to stay with the team but it is not sure if he will take part in any of the matches.
