Women’s sailing festival ‘Steering the Course’ ‘Joining sailing is a decision I will never regret,’ Rebekah Payet |09 October 2021
Seventeen-year-old Rebekah Payet forms part of the new generation of female sailors.
Speaking to Sports NATION, she shares with us and you our readers her love for sailing and the ocean.
Sports NATION: When did you start sailing and why?
Rebekah Payet: I began in 2016 but already had an interest in watersports. I was competitively swimming at the time and always ready to take on a new challenge despite the busy schedule with my education. Sailing is not a popular sport in our small island nation but I was intrigued with the skills I would learn and knowledge about the sea that I love so much.
Sports NATION: Who introduced you to sailing?
Rebekah Payet: A few of my classmates who had already began their journey in sailing introduced me to this amazing sport. Joining this sport is a decision I will never regret.
Sports NATION: What have been your best moments in sailing?
Rebekah Payet: Travelling for sailing competitions and mingling with sailors from various countries. Being able to witness the beauty of the ocean with all of its glorious flora and fauna.
Sports NATION: What are your goals as a sailor?
Rebekah Payet: I think every sportsperson once dreamt of competing in the Olympics, however this dream is not for everyone. I hope to have the chance to sail to multiple continents and enjoy life at sea.
