Message from Electoral Commission on the International Day of Democracy

Danny Lucas

‘Let’s continue to strive towards the promotion of Democracy’

International Day of Democracy on September 15 is celebrated by all United Nations member States.

The theme for 2021 ‘Encouraging the World’s Governments to Strengthen Democracy’ emphasises the importance of the role of the Electoral Commission towards its commitment in upholding the principle of universal suffrage, which is a fundamental right of every registered citizen of Seychelles.

Elections in democracy is the central component towards the legitimacy of any Government. The success of any electoral process therefore greatly depends on an informed and participative population, which is a prerequisite for democracy.

On the occasion of the International Day of Democracy, the Commission reaffirms its commitment towards a political democratic landscape, committed to the implementation of sustainable approaches for the purpose of promoting inclusivity and participation.

The chairman of the Electoral Commission, Danny Lucas, takes this opportunity to support and encourage the government, political organisations, all stakeholders, and the people of Seychelles to continue to strive towards the promotion of Democracy.
