Margaret Woodfield Pouponeau, Seychelles’ oldest citizen, celebrated her 109th birthday
on Sunday August 15.
In a small gathering held at her residence at St Louis in the presence of her children, grandchildren and those closest to her, Mrs Pouponeau was bestowed with gift baskets and flowers from First Lady Linda Ramkalawan, principal secretary for the Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs Kevin Perrine, principal secretary for family affairs Clive Roucou, district administrator Denise Clarisse and member of the National Assembly for St Louis Sathyanarayan Naidu.
Born on August 15, 1912 in a family of seven, Mrs Pouponeau grew up at Anse Royale before moving to St Louis where she now resides with one of her daughters Daphne Pouponeau.
The well-known seamstress is still in relatively good health, and is in a good state of mind despite her advanced years.
During Sunday’s celebrations, Mrs Pouponeau graced all present with her rendition of hymns as she cheerfully interacted with those who had turned up to celebrate the milestone birthday with her.
As a long-standing member of the Anglican Diocese, Mrs Pouponeau was also treated to a special service and blessing, right in the comfort of her home. Bishops James Wong and French Chang-Him were present for the prayers and blessings.
“It is a privilege for me to be present today. Out of the fourteen years for which I have served as DA, this is the first centenarian that I have the pleasure of celebrating with. We had a chance to sing happy birthday to Mrs Pouponeau and I am sure that it is something that will definitely mark me. The district is proud and at the same time, as the district authorities, along with the MNA, it is exciting for us as well,” Mrs Clarisse noted.
Mrs Pouponeau has four children, three daughters and one son.
