Karting season opens with exciting races

The long overdue 2021 karting season finally got underway last weekend at the Champions Park Raceway, Roche Caïman, with the Junior and Cadet classes ran on Saturday afternoon and the Intermediates the following day.

With strict guidelines set by the association itself, the National Sports Council (NSC) and the Ministry of Health, the 2021 racing calendar has been set to allow each class to race on separate days, thus reducing the number of drivers and officials gathering together at one time.

The 2021 championship season will consist of eight rounds running up to the beginning of the rainy season in late November. This season, unfortunately, the super quick Masters class will not be raced due to some last moment unforeseen commitments from a number of drivers, though a few drivers will be making guest appearances at other events in order to keep in shape for any eventuality that may arise.

In the Intermediate class raced by nine karts on Sunday, Fabio William took an impressive victory, winning the race from his main challenger Loïc Scharenberg. Christian Bastienne finished third, Cedric Ah-Time fourth, Dean Maillet fifth, Carlos Renaud sixth, Eric Maillet seventh, Jean-David Melanie eighth and Mitra Labrosse ninth. In a close race, the top two broke away from the field while another group led by Bastienne kept chasing. Dean Maillet did well to finish fifth after he had to start last due a qualifying fuel problem leaving him last on the grid. Most of the drivers were feeling the effects of the long lay-off which affected their performance.

The fastest lap time of the day (FTD) was also set by the winner, Fabio with a time of 43.893 seconds.

In the Junior class, Arth Shah looked impressive to take the win with Tamnay Raghwani taking second place after finding it tough getting back on the track again.

In the Cadet class, Delroy Lionnet again outpaced his twin brother Enzo for the win. His run was impressive, especially after taking the opportunity to practice at a previous test day.

Yohan Cadeau was also feeling the effects of the long lay-off but managed to claim third place, while newcomer Terence Anderson made good progress during the day to take fourth position.

The fastest lap time for this class was set by Delroy with a time of 42.699 seconds.

Round two will take place in two weeks’ time.
