Know the colour signs of a disaster - DRDM |11 July 2013
It has been proven that colour is the best way to warn the public of a disaster
Using colour codes will save time explaining details of the warning level and therefore speed up the process of getting the information to the public.
However colour code must be understood by all if it has to be effective.
Here in Seychelles we have developed 4 types of warning level for a tsunami, based mainly on the magnitude of the earthquake and the height of the tide when the wave reaches our shores. Each of the warning level is associated with a specific colour.
The definition of each colour code is as follows:
GREEN: an earthquake has occurred but possibility of a tsunami is low
YELLOW: an earthquake of higher magnitude has occured but still possibility of a tsunami reaching our country is low
However ORANGE and RED indicate a strong possibility that a tsunami has developed and can reach Seychelles.
