Ile Perseverance secondary gets picnic benches |31 July 2018
The Ile Perseverance secondary school has received a donation of six picnic benches from the Seychelles Centennial Women’s Lions Club.
The handover of the benches took place in a small ceremony at the school on Saturday.
The Ile Perseverance secondary school, which opened in January this year, had a lack of sitting facilities for the students during lunch and break time. Since the cafeteria is fairly small and cannot accommodate all students to have their food, students were often found sitting in the staircases or standing.
Cecile Marcel, the school’s head teacher, explained that having students sit in corridors or staircases isn’t a lovely sight and it is a culture that the school does not want to encourage.
Therefore she went knocking on some doors for sponsorships or donations which has resulted in this donation of benches.
The president of the Seychelles Centennial Women’s Lions Club, Uma Ramani, said she feels that the school environment is a very important aspect of the overall education of the students.
“Once you have been able to provide the students with better sitting facilities, it generally encourages them to learn better,” said Mrs Ramani.
This is the first project that the Seychelles Centennial Women’s Lions Club wanted to accomplish.
Mrs Ramani said that this year they will be targeting to help more schools.
Ms Marcel expressed her gratitude for this kind gesture and thanked the Seychelles Centennial Women’s Lions Club.
The ceremony ended with a student interpreting the song ‘Greatest Love Of All’ by Whitney Houston.
