Deaf students from the Au Cap primary school can now expect to study in a more conducive learning environment following renovation work on their classroom.
The newly renovated class is an initiative of the Seychelles Centennial Lions Club (SCLC) and sponsored by Hari Enterprise to the tune of R65,000.
It was the Minister for Education and Human Resource Development Joel Morgan who officially opened the new class, in a small ceremony at the school yesterday.
Also present were the president of SCLC Sashi Kumar, the director of Hari Enterprise Harish Patel, members of SCLC, students and parents.
The new class, which has been fitted with new chairs, tables, air condition and new windows, among others, will accommodate nine deaf students, from 4 to 16 years old.
Mr Morgan thanked SCLC and Hari Enterprise for the work undertaken on the classroom for the deaf students.
“The projects that we are honouring consisted of the renovation of windows, doors and flooring of the classroom. This will provide a more conducive learning environment for the children and their teachers. Such project brings about a positive difference in the lives of the students and can enhance their sense of belonging,” he said.
He added that the SCLC has been very active providing to the community and towards a better education.
“The SCLC has been very proactive in their commitment towards helping the challenged and caring for education in the community. We sincerely hope that this can inspire other organisations to also come forward and make a difference in the lives of our children. Our education system needs the cooperation and support of all its partners,” he said.
Since the creation of SCLC, the association has contributed a lot to the community, and towards enhancing the education of the Seychellois students. This year marks its first project towards a better education.
Ms Kumar pointed out that such donation will allow the deaf students to have a better future.
“It’s our first project for the year, and thanks to our sponsors we were able to make the dream become a reality for the students. The classroom will allow the students to have a more comfortable environment and will provide better learning facilities for the teachers,” she said.
At the end of the ceremony, Minister Morgan, Ms Kumar and Mr Patel received a token from the school.
