Pointe Larue secondary launches Social Science club |18 July 2017
The social science department of the Pointe Larue secondary school celebrated their social science day on July 5 to promote history and geography outside of the classroom.
The event’s ceremony included the launch of the school’s first ever Social Science club, finals of the quiz competition, awards presentation among others.
In attendance were fellow teachers, sponsors, parents and school affiliates.
According to the school’s social science head of department (HOD), Vanessa Seth, each subject department are encouraged to take a day to celebrate and promote their subjects.
Her department felt it was about time the social science day was reinitiated after two years of being absent on the school’s annual calendar.
This year’s theme revolved around “Patriotism and Blue Economy”, two topics which have been much talked about this year.
Throughout the month of June students were given the opportunity to express their opinions on the above themes through diverse contests such as poem, quiz, posters and essay competitions.

There were a variety of prizes for the taking including shields, trips to Silhouette, tickets to visit the aquarium, glass bottom boat excursions, puzzles, books and stationery.
The prizes were mainly sponsored by The James Michel Foundation, the Jj Spirit Foundation and the Seychelles Fishing Authorities (SFA), all of which are organisations that are sympathetic towards school programmes.
Jimmy Port-Louis, a representative of Jj Spirit Foundation, said: “Our foundation encourages initiatives such as these because they have a positive impact on youths. Mitigating the social ills and other negative elements encountered in schools should be everyone’s top priority.”
