SNYC teams up with Pointe Larue secondary school to prepare future student body members |09 June 2017

During the month of May, the Seychelles National Youth Council hosted preparatory workshops for a group of exemplary students who have been selected to form part of the Pointe Larue secondary school’s student body.

This group of students is expected to give a helping hand at the school by being role models and mentors to their peers.

The programme started with brief introduction about the newly introduced mentorship programme initiated by the Seychelles National Youth Council (SNYC). The students were then divided into two groups to follow two separate sessions. The two groups were later rotated.

Entitled ‘The importance of Education’, the first workshop was ran by Lyanne Aristide. Through this session emphasis was laid on the fact that education enhances one’s decision-making skills and gives rise to financial independence. It also boosts the self-confidence of an individual and increases the chance of being heard and taken seriously by peers and others in our society. It was also seen that education is crucial for the economic prosperity of a nation.

The second workshop aimed at equipping the group with basic mentoring skills started off with group work to establish a rapport between the students. They were also given the chance to suggest areas that they feel more empowerment is required so that they can be in a better position to help their peers. Suggestions that arose include leadership skills, communication skills, conflict management and self-esteem.

Overall, the workshops were successful as the students took part actively and did not hesitate to voice out their concerns and aspirations.
