South Africa still an approved country for scholarships |30 January 2017

Many A-level graduates are wondering if South Africa is still a destination where they can apply for scholarships after the turmoil of last year. The Agency for National Human Resource Development (ANHRD) has reassured the parents and students that South Arica is one of the Government of Seychelles’ approved venue for courses in Education, Statistics, Forensic Science, Quantity Surveying, IT and International Relations. In 2016 there was a total of 49 students in South Africa pursuing their studies in many fields, namely, geosciences, geography & geology, economics, public administration & business management, political science, biochemistry, chemistry & microbiology, graphic web design, zoology, sound production, humanities - physical geography, social sciences, critical care and trauma, paediatric surgery, medicine and nursing science.

South Africa is also the main country whereby students are sent to pursue their pilot licenses. “Although for this year, we are not offering any scholarships for pilot licenses as the quota is full. If there are students who want to do pilot studies, they can apply next year,” the chief executive of ANHRD, Terrence Françoise, clarified.

Regarding the allocation of a seat at the University of Seychelles with 12 points, Frances Barra from the ANHRD stated that “the policy was established over four (4) years – January 2013, as stated in the Government of Seychelles Scholarship Scheme point 7.0 UniSey Scholarship. Scholarships shall be awarded based on students having 12 academic points and gaining entry into UniSey and partner universities.” If the student wants to study abroad, then the parents will have to contribute towards the cost of the studies. Further information can be received from the office of the ANHRD.
