SIT in action |05 November 2016

The Seychelles Institute of Technology showcased the activities that go on at the institute on a normal training day during its open day held yesterday.

The open day kicked off with a short ceremony to welcome the visitors who included parents, secondary schools students, students from other professional centres and its partners in industry at the Providence Industrial Estate as well as members of the general public.

Visitors had the opportunity to observe practical activities in both the workshops and around the campus by students on the different programmes.

There were also woodwork products like wooden doors, door frames, stools, coconut scrapers (larap koko) on sale in the carpentry workshop.

The Seychelles Institute of Technology (SIT) has a unique recognition in Seychelles as the only Unesco-Unevoc TVET professional centre.

The theme for this year’s open day remained ‘SIT in Action’ and it is aimed at reminding all potential learners, students and the general public that SIT is the professional centre which leads learners to acquire employable practical skills, expertise and understanding in the different domains of engineering, built environment and telecommunication including renewable energy.

SIT director Hubert Barbé said “this theme is important as we strive in our endeavour to turn SIT into an action-packed professional centre, where training activities can go on till late in the evening and even during weekends”.

He said the centre started off with 470 fulltime students in January and presently there are 400, while there are 37 learners following part-time courses.

“All the SIT certificate programmes, except that in painting and decorating, have been upgraded and will be offered at advanced certificate in 2017. More apprenticeship choices at certificate level have been offered to S5 leavers of 2016 and in ‘The way forward agenda’, SIT will be introducing IT systems network programmes at diploma and advanced diploma in 2017 starting with part-time,” said Mr Barbé.
