Anse Boileau primary school excels in maths and science quiz |12 August 2016
Primary six pupils from Anse Boileau school snatched first place in the finals of the annual maths and science quiz competition.
The Persévérance primary with 14 points is the close runner-up toAnse Boileau primary who had garnered 16 points.
The winners’ team comprised Emily Walter, Andrio Ranaivonirina, Yuan Onezia and Hillary Lowseck. They each received vouchers, certificates and trophies in addition to the trophy their school won.
Hillary also emerged as the best performer in the competition.
The Anse Boileau team took back their title which they lost to Pointe Larue school last year.
The competition is organised by the maths and science department of the Anse Boileau secondary school and sponsored by the Indian Association of Seychelles and insurance company Royal Shield.
The quiz has helped to familiarise the primary six students with the secondary school and identify topics in those subjects students have weaknesses in.
And this year for the first time all 21 primary schools took part in the competition.
The head of department for Maths, Kunethra Verghese, said he is proud that all 21 schools took part this year and for the 10th year, which will be in 2017, it will be done on a large scale.
“It started out with the feeder schools of Anse Boileau secondary and over the years it expanded to other areas. This has been a great achievement,” said Mr Verghese.
Deputy head of the school, Merna Naiken, said the enthusiasm and eagerness shown by the primary school is encouraging for her school and the promotion of maths and science as subjects in schools.
“When one looks at the number of teachers from primary schools gathered with their students, it shows the interest and commitment goes beyond their normal school hours,” she said.
The school also gave a token of appreciation to the Royal Shield for sponsoring the contest and the volunteer who helped out during the day.
Hillary said her heart was excited to be called as the best performer.
“My heart was stomping so loud,” she exclaimed
In the quarterfinal she found the quiz easy enough but it got harder towards the semifinal and final.
Rhazy Cedras, who was part of the Persévérance team, said he found the competition fairly easy.
“I am not too disappointed because we put a lot of effort and came out second,” he said.
