• Major lifestyle changes need to be done, says specialist
Dr Enoch Sundaram of AG Hospital and Lifestyle Centre in India blessed us with his presence for the 40th Anniversary of Seychelles Independence to promote good health and well-being.
The AG Hospital and Lifestyle Centre is a place where scientifically proven natural remedies are used to promote health which ignites the body’s natural abilities to heal combined with God’s healing touch.
To celebrate the economical, technological and other aspects of our progress and development, the Seychelles Seventh-Day Adventist (SDA) Mission felt it was important to take some time and reflect on our culture and history which possesses countless treasures that are vital to the betterment of our country.
Such treasures include the use of our traditional medicinal herbs and plant remedies for treatment of various ailments which our ancestors were faced with and thus successfully overcame.
In this vein, Dr Enoch visited Seychelles and hosted sessions on reversing diabetes and hypertension while attributing additional value to our medicinal plants and herbs and its usage in our modern lifestyle today.
Dr Enoch even appeared in the health expo held at the National Sports Council (NSC) hall last month to counsel Seychellois and he said he was very pleased with the response.
“We had a very good response from the people and the aim of the health expo was to raise awareness about health as it is very low here. In fact it’s the case all over the world that’s why we have high incidences of conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and the number of patients suffering from these is increasing,” he said
He said the reason behind this is that people lack knowledge on good health and long life so they need to be taught their causes.
“In the health expo we taught many people how to prevent diabetes, hypertension and heart disease, what food to eat, what lifestyle to follow,” he said.
Talking about major lifestyle changes that need to be done Dr Enoch said the most important one is to stop eating white riceand preferably eat brown rice.
“When you take white rice you have chances of diabetes, heart disease, hypertension because there is a very important nutrition that the rice husk has so if you leave this out then your body is deficient, that’s why people get lifestyle disease,” he said.
“Secondly you should refrain from using white bread and opt for whole wheat bread instead,” he said.
The third pertinent issue is refined sugar. Dr Enoch is advising us to avoid a lot of refined sugars such as white sugar, sodas (coca cola).
According to Dr Enoch, studies also show that tea, coffee and alcohol is associated with diabetes, so people need to stop consuming these beverages.
“These are the major lifestyle changes that need to be done and exercise along with not smoking is also very important,” he said.
Director for health of the SDA church Gemma Changty-Young said they frequently conduct health expos throughout the year to touch the lives of all, from youths to elderly as lifestyle diseases begin at an early age.
“The last expo was very successful, our exhibit was based on ‘New start’ which is nutrition, exercise, water, sunshine, temperance, air, rest and trust in God. Our counselling was based on these seven components,” she said.
She said from the feedback they have received from those they consulted during the expo some said they would put what they have learned in practice for their lives and health to improve to reverse diabetes and hypertension.
