Blue light can be found everywhere as it is a natural phenomenon and part of the visible light spectrum. It is present in daylight and helps us to stay awake. It can also be found in modern lights known as LED lights and compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) – most of them which emit a high level of blue light.
Other devices known to emit blue light are smartphones, laptops, tablets, GPS, flat screen computers and TV screens. Although blue light is natural, over-exposure can have an opposing effect leading to fatigue, eye strain and it can even lead to sleeplessness.
When looking at the various sources that emit blue-violet light, no argument can be given that there is an increase in the use of digital devices and modern lighting (ex. LED lighting and CFLs).
This brings us to the conclusion that our eyes are more exposed to the increased blue-light leading to an accumulation that occurs over time. There is evidence that long term exposure of blue-violet light at a certain frequency may contribute to photochemical damage of the retina, which slowly increases the risk of age-related macular degeneration over time (known as the ‘blue light hazard’).
The anti-reflex blue control filter helps to regulate the circadian rhythm (day-night rhythm). There is also evidence that blue light in a specific spectrum is important for proper regulation of melatonin in the body, thus influencing the circadian rhythm and general wellbeing.
