Guy Morel Institute to train youth workers |10 March 2016

The Guy Morel Institute of the University of Seychelles (UniSey) will start training youth workers as from September this year.

As per a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the university and the Seychelles National Youth Council (SNYC), future youth workers will follow a Diploma in Youth Work at the Ma Joie based institute, with the option of pursuing with a degree at the UniSey.

The MoU was signed yesterday afternoon between the dean of the Guy Morel Institute Shella Mohideen and the SNYC chief executive (CEO) Alvin Laurence.

The signing coincided with activities to mark the 18th anniversary of the youth association.

Mrs Mohideen remarked that the two institutions enjoy a very good relationship, having worked together in the drafting of the youth policy and in offering training in management.

Describing the MoU as an important building block in the relationship, she added that competent youth workers are needed to deliver successful youth work.

The course, she said, will provide the necessary skills, knowledge and attitude for them to be efficient in their work.

SNYC deputy CEO Ghislaine Belmont agreed that youth work is becoming more and more challenging and demanding.

She consequently called on potential youth workers to enroll in the course and take full benefit of it.

“Opportunity has been brought closer to you. Please make good use of it. Professionalism in our world is not an option but a necessity,” she remarked.

As the youth worker for Glacis, Catherina Barron rightly concluded: “Education is the most profitable investment for the future”.
