Samantha Aglae sworn in as new member of Human Rights Commission |17 October 2015

Following her appointment earlier this month as the new member of the National Human Rights Commission, Samantha Aglae yesterday morning took the Oath of Allegiance and the Oath of Office before President James Michel at State House.

This was in the presence of Vice-President Danny Faure, the speaker of the National Assembly Dr Patrick Herminie, the president of the Court of Appeal Francis MacGregor, the attorney general Ronny Govinden, the chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission Dora Zatte as well as other distinguished guests.

Speaking to the press after she had sworn in Mrs Aglae described her appointment to the Commission as a great opportunity for her.

“The appointment itself was unexpected but I am very grateful for having been chosen and I see it as an opportunity to know and develop further in a new field and I will make sure I respect the rights of every individual who bring their case before the Commission,” Mrs Aglae said.

“It will be a challenge for me to be part of the reform of certain laws and through my personal knowledge and experience I will contribute to make the commission grow and be better in the deliverance of what is expected of it,” she added.

Currently a private attorney at law and notary public and now a member of the commission Mrs Aglae said; “I will remain in my practice but I will avail myself whenever necessary for the work of the commission.”

The commission is appointed by the President in consultation with the Chief Justice and the speaker of the National Assembly.

The commission is made up of three members and the other two are Dora Zatte as chairperson and retired Judge Ranjan Perera.

Mrs Aglae is taking the position left vacant by Farzana Jumaye.
