2015 Commonwealth Youth Games - Bonne powers into semifinals |09 September 2015

Boxer Lorenzo Bonne will do battle for a place in the 69kg final when he steps into the ring today for his semifinal fight at the 2015 Commonwealth Youth Games in Samoa.

Bonne, a silver medallist at the Indian Ocean Island Games held in Reunion last month, faced the Cayman Islands’ Hopkin Ebanks in yesterday’s quarterfinal fight and he was declared the winner on a 3-0 score.

He will compete in today’s semifinal and the name of his opponent was not yet known by the time of going to press. Bonne is one of two boxers taking part in the games. The other boxer is Edrian Volcère, who lost in the preliminary round on Monday.

Swimming is the only other sport in which Seychellois athletes are taking part.

Dean Hoffman managed a 14th overall finish in the 100m backstroke with a time of 1 minute 10.61 seconds (1:10.61). The gold medal for this event went to Northern Ireland’s Conor Ferguson (55.87 seconds), while the silver went to Clyde Lewis of Australia (56.19 seconds), followed by New Zealand’s Bayley Main (56.95 seconds) with the bronze.

In the 100m freestyle heats, he managed 56.96 seconds and also stopped the clock at 31.99 seconds in the 50m backstroke.

Felicity Passon managed a 12th place overall finish in the 100 backstroke event with a time of 1:07.00. It was New Zealander Bobbi Gichard who went home with the gold medal with a time of 1:00.51, with Gabrielle Fa’Amausili (1:00.86) also of New Zealand winning silver, while third place went to South Africa’s Nathania Van Niekerk (1:03.00).

In the 50m butterfly finals, Passon finished her race in first place, but her time of 28.58 seconds was good enough to earn her ninth place overall. The gold medal was won by South African Erin Paige Gallagher (27.20 seconds), the silver by Australian Lucia Lassman (27.50 seconds), and the bronze by Australian Gemma Cooney (27.52 seconds).

In the 100m freestyle event, she managed a personal best time of 58.04 seconds to finish in eighth place. Australian Lucy McJannett (55.34 seconds) won the gold medal, South African Erin Paige Gallagher (55.61 seconds) took the silver and Australian Shayna Jack (55.67 seconds) won the bronze.
