2015 All-Africa Games - Seychellois ready to take on African challenge |01 September 2015
Seychellois athletes who will be taking part in the All-Africa Games in Congo, Brazzaville from September 4-19, 2015 have already started flying out of the country to compete with the best on the continent.
The Seychelles team for the Games were presented last Friday afternoon at the Seychelles Trading Company’s (STC) conference room as part of the prize-giving ceremony for the medallists of the ninth Indian Ocean Island Games (IOIG).
A total of 110 people form part of the Seychelles delegation and they are leaving the country for the games at different dates, based on the start of the events in Congo, Brazzaville. The largest group left Seychelles on Sunday and they comprised the badminton players, the male and female volleyball teams and the boxing team.
National Sports Council (NSC) chief executive Giovanna Rousseau is the head of the delegation and she said only three groups of athletes have made the team. They are athletes who have met their discipline’s qualifying standards for the games; IOIG gold medallists, and athletes who are on Olympic Scholarships as part of their scholarships requires them to take part in a number of competitions including the All-Africa Games.
“We decided to only take these athletes because if our athletes were unable to win a gold medal at the IOIG which are ranked lower than the All-Africa Games, it would be difficult for them to compete against the whole of Africa,” said Ms Rousseau.
The monetary rewards for All-Africa Games medallists are R50,000 (gold medallist), R35,000 (silver medallist) and R15,000 (bronze medallist).
Seychelles will be taking part in 12 disciples: badminton, athletics, boxing, volleyball, basketball, table tennis, weightlifting, swimming, handisports, judo, taekwondo and karate.
