Pam’s Catering donates to Plaisance primary school |16 April 2015
The 400 students at Plaisance primary who take school meals will now be served warm dishes for lunch.
Pam’s Catering Services donated an electric hot table (Bain Marée) to the school as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) contributions.
The donation was made to commemorate World Health Day which was on April 7.
The hot table worth R20,000 was handed over to the school’s head teacher Sabrina Agathine by the owner of Pam’s Catering, Pamela Albest, in a short ceremony at the dining hall on Friday morning.
This was in the presence of representatives from the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Health, the Public Health Authority and members of the school nutrition committee as well as staff and students of Plaisance primary school.
World Health Day is an opportunity to alert governments, manufacturers, retailers and the public on the importance of food safety and the part each can play in ensuring that the food on peoples’ plates is safe to eat, thus this years’ theme ‘From farm to plate, make food safe’.
Therefore this gesture shows the joint effort by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education to improve the way food is transported and distributed to schools as well as making school meals both appealing and safe for students and staff to eat.
“Much effort is being invested in improving the quality of food, and it is a long process but we won’t stop here. This is a first step for us to be able to ensure that our food is safe for our children,” Brigitte Labonte, the health promotion coordinator in the Ministry of Education, told everyone present.
For her part Mrs Albest, who is also a member of the school nutrition committee, said: “We are very happy to be able to make this contribution and it makes history to see school meals distribution move forward and I hope there will be more improvement.”
Kylie Corgat, a P4 student at the school, expressed gratitude to Pam’s Catering for the wonderful gesture.
“This hot table guarantees that we will receive a hot meal for lunch. I’m also sure that these meals will give us more appetite which will help us eat better and contribute to make us healthier,” she said.
Following the handover, students and invited guest were able to enjoy a demonstration of the hot table in operation.
