Penlac gives boost to waste management at Belonie school |13 April 2015
Pupils and staff of Belonie secondary school can now better manage waste and this has been made possible after Penlac Company Ltd in collaboration with Sustainability for Seychelles (S4S) donated a batch of blue plastic barrels to be used as bins in the school’s anti-littering campaign.
Julia Bijoux and Lynden Gabriel, two representatives of Penlac, the local paint manufacturer based at Le Rocher, handed over the barrels to Jean Claude Hollanda, the deputy head teacher of levels S1-S3 during a short ceremony at the school’s compound.
“We at Penlac make this donation to the school to help protect the environment and rather than throwing away the barrels we believe the school will put them to good use,” said Ms Bijoux.
She noted that Penlac has previously donated a similar consignment of barrels to the prisons department to help prisoners make compost to be used in the prison’s fruit and vegetable gardens.
Mr Gabriel pointed out that the paint manufacturing company’s intention is not only profit-driven but it also endeavours to support the environment through different initiatives which includes producing more eco-friendly paint products as well as different eco-friendly projects through its corporate social responsibility (CSR) proceeds as it believes there is no future without a sustainable environment.
In addition the company also occasionally supports popular sports events.
Ginnie Laurencine, S4S project consultant, also donated stickers to decorate the bins and made a short presentation on sustainable waste management where the key message to the students was to practice the three Rs – Reduce, Re-use and Re-cycle.
Mr Hollanda, on behalf of the school management and pupils, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the donors. On the same day a group of students came together to paint and decorate the barrel bins.
