Seychelles record first ever victory, still finish bottom of group A
The Seychelles Beach Soccer national team celebrated their first win at the inaugural Cosafa Beach Soccer Championship taking place on our shores, but will have to settle for fifth or sixth place in today’s playoff matches.
Seychelles’ win came against Malawi in a match that needed extra-time to decide a winner after the score ended 3-3 in normal time. Seychelles’ winning goal came from captain Robin Mathiot. The victory, however, was marred by ugly scenes at the National Beach Soccer Stadium as the Malawi team even refused to shake hands with our players at the final whistle in a game that saw Seychelles’ Jean-Paul Marguerite sent off for throwing sand at the referee, while coach Bruno was sent to the stands for shoving the official.
Yesterday’s other match ended in a 6-4 win for Madagascar against South Africa.
Seychelles will now meet the South Africans in the fifth/sixth place playoff match, while Malawi will contest the final against Madagascar today.
