Swimming - Eight records set at first SSA series |26 March 2015

Eight new records were improved on Friday March 20 during the first of the Seychelles Swimming Association-sponsored series competition held at the Roche Caïman national swimming pool.

Tamera Appasamy set a new 50m freestyle record in the 9 years and under category with a time of 47.12 seconds, while Alina Muslun broke the 100m breaststroke record in the same category. Muslun’s new record time is 2 minutes 7.60 seconds (2:7.60).

Another record breaker was Aisha Khan who broke the 50m freestyle record in the 10-11 years with a time of 36.52 seconds and Therese Soukup set a new record time of 32.31 seconds in the 12-13 years 50m freestyle event. In the same age group Amy Andre established a new record time in the 100m breaststroke with a time of 1:35.58.

For the boys, Thierry Payet broke the 100m breaststroke record in the 9 and under category with a time of 1:57.97, while Joshua Miller improved the existing record in the 100m breaststroke for the 10- 11 age group with a performance of 1:35.32. Adam Viktora erased his own SSA series record in the 50m freestyle for the 14 years and over category by stopping the clock at 25.34s.

A large crowd attended the event which showcased local swimmers of different ages competing in two strokes – freestyle and breaststroke – over two distances – 50m and 100m.

The series is in its third year and will be held over a period of five months for a total of six series. This is an excellent occasion to motivate young athletes to experience the thrill of competing and a valuable tool for the association to track their progress throughout the year.

Swimmers will accumulate points for each race and at the end of the series the best three swimmers in each age group – male and female – will be awarded prizes. In addition, there will be an overall prize for the best male and female swimmers who achieve the highest total points during the whole series.
The defending champions are Farhan Muslun and Sophie Bouchereau with 506 and 490 points respectively.

The points are awarded in the following manner: 20 points for 1st place, 18 points for 2nd place, 16 for 3rd, 14 for 4th, 12 for 5th, 10 for 6th, 9 for 7th, 8 for 8th, 7 for 9th, 6 for 10th, 5 for 11th, 4 for 12th, 3 for 13th, 2 for 14th, and 1 point for 15th and onwards.

Two additional points will be awarded to the swimmer who breaks the competition record.
The second event of the series will be held on April 17 and will feature the 50m butterfly and 200m backstroke races.

Swimmers who want to take part can still do so but the organisers have to provide the register at least one week prior to the event.
