38th annual Inter-School Athletics Championships |29 May 2014

Athletes vie for places in June 29 finals

Prospective competitors for the forthcoming 38th annual Inter-School Athletics Championships had the chance to book their place in various events during the two-day qualifiers which took place at Stad Popiler.

The heats took place on Wednesday for secondary schools and post-secondary institutions, while yesterday younger athletes from primary schools got the chance to compete in theirs.

Eight athletes with the fastest times, best distances and best height during the heats will progress through to the finals which take place on June 29. The athletes ranked ninth and 10th in all the events during the heats will go into the championships as reserves and will only compete in case any of the eight qualified athletes cannot on June 29.

The annual Inter-School Athletics Championships are organised yearly and are part of activities to celebrate the country’s Independence Day anniversary. They are the biggest national sports manifestation on the calendar.

In last year’s championships a total of 15 records were broken and the oldest one was broken by Ezra Almaze as she erased from the record books Lousianna Françoise’s 16-year-old girls’ under-18 400m best time of 1 minute 01.09 seconds (1:01.09) with a new time of 1:01.07.

With a large number of young athletes breaking onto the scene since then, this year’s championships will surely provide some interesting results along with tight competition in most events.
