Lemuria resort celebrates Earth Day |05 May 2014
Constance Lemuria Resort celebrated the World Earth Day to show its passion and commitment to the planet.
The main objective was to create awareness, to think and live more sustainably within our natural environment and to preserve the natural beauty of Seychelles.
Different activities were initiated for guests and staff to take part in educational as well as restoration programmes.
One activity was the restoration of mangrove areas as they protect the soil from erosion, provide a habitat for a diversity of wildlife and they filter the river water before flowing into the sea.
The mangrove wetlands at Constance Lemuria Resort are small yet they host several species of fish, crabs, snails, insects, birds and act as a nursery ground for plenty of species.
The restoration activity was necessary as some of the mangroves were dying for unknown reasons -- most probably because of a decline in the water when the drainage to the sea was blocked with sand two years ago, resulting in a disturbed water cycle which prevented the free flow and exchange of water and causing the eventual death of plants.
However, when the sand was removed, the water quality improved and some mangroves were transplanted to restore the area.
On World Earth Day Contance Lemuria Seychelles extended the restoration area to fill the gaps left by dead mangroves and restore the valuable habitat.
Moreover, guests and team members were educated about the value of the mangrove systems and were encouraged to take part.
The accompanying photographs show staff and guests taking part in the mangrove restoration exercise.
