Football - Changes to Airtel Cup announced |08 April 2014
The Seychelles Football Federation (SFF) has announced changes to this year’s Airtel Cup competition.
The announcement was made last Friday by SFF chairman Elvis Chetty during the launch of the 2014 Airtel Rising Stars programme at the Maison Football.
Firstly, rather than having the league take a break in order to have the Airtel Cup, the competition will now run alongside the league campaign, where specific weekends will be dedicated to it, much like the FA Cup runs alongside the Premier League in England.
There is also a change in the grouping of teams, where the two groups have been selected based on region. Meaning, the teams from Praslin and La Digue (Côte d’Or, Revengers, LightStars, La Passe and Anse Reunion) have been grouped together while those from Mahé (St Michel, St Louis Suns, St Francis, Northern Dynamo and The Lions) will compete in the other group.
The final change will see the semifinals played over two legs.
Mr Chetty says these changes have come about as a result of measures taken to reduce the cost of travel for the teams who now will not have to travel across the islands until the semifinals.
