MCB donates dictionaries and posters to schools |02 April 2014

For the past few years the public and private schools in Seychelles have been benefiting from a yearly donation of dictionaries by the Mauritius Commercial Bank (MCB) but this year it has also donated posters.

The educational programme entitled ‘My World Your Words’ was initiated by MCB in 2008 and aims at encouraging kids to find the right words to express themselves. With this programme in place, every year the MCB makes it part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) to donate dictionaries to schools across Seychelles.

This year it has given English-French dictionaries to help children move from one language to another quicker and with more ease.

It is the first year that the bank has donated more than just dictionaries, but also a range of very artistic, education posters about the use of water. All the posters are in French to encourage the use of the language and are centred on the theme of water not only as a resource we use to drink or shower but also in terms of geography, history and science.

The posters will be especially beneficial to children as they are usually more in tune with visual learning.

Muriel Morgan of the MCB explained that during previous years, the bank mostly focused on public schools within the regions, like Anse Royale and Victoria, where it trades, but this year it wants to make it different and add the posters to the donation.

“We have been doing this since before the CSR tax came into play, so it is truly our way of giving back to the community and our wish is to help develop the youths into who they want to be,” Ms Morgan said.

According to her, 400 dictionaries will be given to state schools and another 250 will be shared between the three private schools – Ecole Française des Seychelles, Independent School and International School Seychelles. As for the posters 200 will be distributed to the state schools while 50 will be given to the private schools.

In the future, Ms Morgan noted, the MCB will definitely continue the tradition of donating dictionaries since it is an educational tool which will always be in demand. The bank hopes that it can occasionally keep giving extra tools such as posters and others.

Representatives from the Ministry of Education, Independent School and International School were present to accept the donation.

The MCB also donated some of the company calendars featuring some of the different countries where the bank operates.
