Independent School AS and IGCSE results surpass expectations |05 February 2014

The Independent School has said that 2013 was the first time that its students attempted AS (Year 1 of the A-Level programme) CIE exams and the results have surpassed its expectations with 54% of all grades being at A and B.

Independent School also said that the S5 students of 2013 have also delivered a very commendable performance, with an overall 99.4% pass rate and 85% of all grades being at C and above (Distinction and Credit passes).

“The AS results were particularly pleasing for the students themselves, the staff, and the school as 100 out of a total of 121 grades are between A and C. This is an excellent performance by the students, especially as it was our first attempt at this level of exams,” said a press release from the school.

The school also pointed out that A* grades are not awarded at AS level, and the lowest grade achievable is an E. A student who fails an exam is awarded a U grade.

The school said some of the students who gave an outstanding performance in their IGCSE a year ago once again showed their potential for excellence at AS with three of them being awarded A in their four subjects. They are Samuel Mancienne-Pool, Laurent Mein and Beatrice Morel, while Ameer Afif, Ryan Pragassen and Joshua Larue obtained three A grades and 1 B. The other students who obtained three ‘A’s are Richard Mussard, Arita Das and Nicholas Adam.

On the IGCSE results Independent School said of the 50 students who sat for the examinations in 2013, 45 (or 90%) obtained five or more grades between A* and C. Nineteen of them (or 38%) scored at least 5 ‘A’s and better.

“46 students also qualified for the International Certificate of Education (ICE) award, 19 with Distinctions, 23 with Merit and 4 Pass. To be awarded for an ICE, a student must pass six or more IGCSE subjects from five different subject groups. This is to ensure that the students receive a broad education at this level,” said Independent School.

85% of all grades are between A* and C. While last year the top performers at IGCSE were all boys, this year is not the case, the school said.

Independent School also mentioned the names of the students who scored A* or ‘A’s in IGCSE descending order. They are: Sasha Payet with 7 A*s and 2 ‘A’s; Sujitha Pillay with 6 A* and 4 ‘A’s;
Siddarth Jawahar with 5 A* and 4 ‘A’s; Shane Barallon with 5 A* and 3 ‘A’s; Pierre-Andre Belle with 4 A* and 5 ‘A’s and Chirelle Lau-Tee with 4 A* and 5 ‘A’s. Two of the students scored only A*s and ‘A’s in their exams and they are Sujitha Pillay with 6 A* and 4 ‘A’s and Jean-Luc Lebon with 3 A* and 7 ‘A’s.

“The percentage of A* and A grades obtained are 40%, exactly as for last year’s group while 67.5% of all passes are between A* and B which is better than for the three previous years,” said the school.
