Education minister visits schools on Praslin to mark new academic year |22 January 2014
Education Minister Macsuzy Mondon visited schools on Praslin on Monday to mark the start of the new academic year 2014.
Minister Mondon was accompanied by her principal secretary Merida Delcy.
The visit started at the Baie St Anne primary school with a special assembly animated by teachers and students.
Addressing the students, the minister appealed to them to start working hard from the very first day of the term and not to lose sight of their goal.
The assembly also saw the presentation of a set of educational books for the Baie Ste Anne primary school library by the chairperson of the Parents Teachers Association for Praslin secondary school Anarita Hoareau.
The presentation of books was made possible through an initiative called ‘My Book Club’ introduced in the school by Hoareau whereby parents and students can purchase books online through catalogues while at the same time receiving a percentage of the books free of charge. Such an initiative has been welcomed by the Ministry of Education in its efforts to further promote reading among students.
During her visit at the Grand Anse primary school, the minister and her principal secretary held discussions with the head teacher with regard to the start of the new academic year, projects as well as discussed general feedback for the year 2013.
Minister Mondon also took the opportunity to visit the road near the Vallée de Mai which has remained closed following bad weather of last week. As a result, the ministry has decided to delay the start of the first term of the Praslin secondary school.
Minister Mondon pointed out that although the secondary students will start their school term at a later date, arrangements are being made for them to catch up with their studies.
