After RA Sisters were booted out of the competition for not turning up for two league matches, the National Basketball Technical Committee (NBTC) within the SBF decided that the four women’s teams would play a league before moving to the cross-knockout semifinals.
In group A, Anse Etoile Stars beat Mont Fleuri 62-54 on the back of 21 points from youngster Jana Malbrook. Dynah Louis added 18 points including two treys, while Simone Malbrook, Jana’s mother, chipped in with 11.
In the cross-knockout semifinal this coming Saturday, the Stars will now meet Juniors who lost their group B match 46-94 to HotShots, who were led in scoring by Beguitta Fontaine with 31 points, nine of which came from behind the three-point arc. Beguitta’s sister Zerah Fontaine finished with 19 points, while Jenita Toussaint added 13.
Group B winners HotShots will meet Mont Fleuri in the second semifinal on Sunday for a place in the Sunday October 27 final.
In the men’s competition, defending champions Mont Fleuri who beat Premium Cobras 81-67 last year for their first major trophy, dispatched second divisioners Anse Etoile in the first quarterfinal on Monday.
The players of coach Nigel Ah-kong, who eliminated fellow first divisioners Drifters on a 85-67 score in the earlier round, won Monday’s game on a 87-42 score.
Centre Brian Agricole paced the Dawgz with 18 points and Steven André added 15. Luciano Moumou and Christian Toulon finished with 14 points apiece for losers Anse Etoile.
They now await the winners of today’s clash between Beau Vallon Heat and PLS Hawks. While the Hawks did not break a sweat to reach the quarterfinal after RC Dynamics could not field a team, the Heat powered past Cadets 91-67 on the back of 31 points from playmaker Giovanni Laval.
Yesterday, first divisioners Baya were to meet second division side AAP Brothers in a quarterfinal encounter.
AAAP Brothers eliminated Juniors 95-41 and Baya had three players scoring in double digits – Alex Baron (16 points), captain Dave Roseline (13) and Hendricks Denis (10) – in their 75-68 victory over last year’s losing finalists Premium Cobras.
The last quarterfinal tomorrow is between Angels and MBU Rockers who were paced by Brian Morel with 32 points in their 84-69 victory over Cascade Bullets.
